2012 ADVISORS ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

Kathleen B. Cooper, Ph.D. Senior Fellow, John G. Tower Center for Political Studies, SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY

The U.S. economy is at as complicated a crossroad as at any time in recent memory. There are positives, such as the solid first-quarter rise in consumer spending. There are weak spots, particularly in the business economy, where investment is weak and inventories have softened of late. There are the difficult to read indicators: It will be some time before anyone knows if the recent decline in personal savings is evidence of a more confident consumer or a less rational one. And additional wild cards abound at home (Will real estate ever rebound? Will gasoline prices ever settle down?) and abroad (will Europe’s debt crisis ever end?). During this session, Dr. Cooper will discuss this in an overview of what to expect from the economy through the remainder of 2012 and into 2013.
