Portfolio Management Software

Postby Bean Counter » Fri Aug 22, 2008 9:43 am

I'm an independent RIA that manages just a few client accounts, net worth of accounts < 1 million.  My custodian is Scottrade. I'm looking for a reliable, simple Portfolio Mgmt Software, that is not terribly expensive.

I don't want to pay over $1000 per year.  I was  hoping there would be a subscription based service out there priced by account or AUM vs flat subcription fee.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Check out Portfolio Director www.portfoliodirector.com.  It works with Scottrade and is low cost. Good luck.

I've yet to try them, but there's a firm called Trade-PMR that only deals w/ RIA's.  They have a system that looks pretty good in terms of tracking & reporting (as well as billing) & they only charge $100 a month.  You also get level 2 streaming quotes.  I plan on opening my next few accounts w/ them to try them out & will let you know what I think...

I have personally developed an Excel spreadsheet that may be perfect for your needs. It gives an overview of the entire portfolio (or multiple portfolios) and summarizes by portfolio owner (husband, wife, etc) asset class, cash flows, percentages, etc.

If you are interested contact me thru this forum.

Bean counter, I have not checked any of above posts but see if this is helpful to you:

(recently I have received an email from a participant in this forum)

Vig,

Going thru the forum archives, I came across a posting from you about how you use morningstar.com to manage your portfolios. You also mentioned that you could forward a copy of a post that shows how you do that. I know I'm coming to the party about a year late, but do you still have that info available?

I've had it w/the price of Principia.

My answer:

Hi, I assume that you're referring to the way that I monitor a few

portfolios. But, I doubt it if it is suitable for a planner with many

clients. This is b/c I need to update the number of shares manually (I do it quarterly)

since I use the WatchList Portfolio method instead of the Transaction Portfolio. See it

here at the Portfolio Manager:

http://www.morningstar.com/Cover/Tools.html

(They have a new beta version going on now.)

As a premium paying member (app $120 annually, but I am "grandfathered" and pay nothing)  I set the columns in the Portfolio Manager widow, as follows:

(You must have Ticker Symbols for the funds or use proxies that have.)

My View 1: Name, Weight, Total Return: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007,

YTD, Standard Deviation (3yrs), Beta (3yrs)

(They took out the data for 2002 which was important! Why?)

My View 2: Name, Ticker, Current Price, Market Value, Shares Held,

Weight, Total Return: YTD, 12mo, 3yrs, 5yrs, 10yrs.

(In addition you have a view of the Snapshot showing M* STARS)

I also check the portfolio with the X-Ray (and Stock  Intersections in it), and the Asset Allocator.

As I understand it, M* Advisor WorkStation is the one that might

interest you but it is more costly.

Regards

Q:

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for.  I just want a way to monitor the 6 portfolios (90/10, 80/20, etc) I use for my clients.

I signed up for a trial yesterday and thought it looked pretty comprehensive. Principia is total overkill for me and getting horrendously expensive, too.

I do have a question for you, is there a way to print 'My View'?

My A.

Hi, for customers I would use the Print option in the window

(Morningstar Portfolio Snapshot Report). For myself, I highlight the

window (only the numbered data in it from the Name on top to the last

number under the Total Return last column for My View 2) ) and do a

Print Selection. I just did it and I see for my portfolio a YTD loss

of -27.02%. I am getting sicker and sicker from day to day. G-d,

please help!

p.s. when I update a portfolio (Modify it) I give it a new name which

is the same as before but I add the current date to it (and delete the

old one). I have yet to explore the Transaction Portfolio method

(which should simplify the updating).

Best
