Hilliard Lyons Pushes into Carolinas

Hilliard Lyons has scooped up a team of veteran advisors from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and opened a new office in Hendersonville, N.C. as it looks to continue its expansion into the region.

The three advisors, Peter Shanahan, Dwayne Powell and Dean Gauthier, operate as The SPG Group of Hilliard Lyons and will help to meet growing demand in the area, according to Darryl Metzger, director of the firm’s Private Client Group.

“The emphasis is definitely in the Carolinas both North Carolina and South Carolina,” he said in a phone interview from Hilliard Lyon’s headquarters in Louisville, Ky. “It’s been one of our fastest growing markets in the past year.”

The firm added an office in Winston-Salem, N.C., in July and recently filled its Greenville, S.C., office, which is about 40 miles away from Hendersonville, N.C., to capacity. In total, the firm has north of 400 financial consultants and 70 offices.

Together, the SPG group managed $165 million in client assets and has 52 years of experience in the financial services industry.

Shanahan, who began his career in 1985, spent time at American Express and Edward Jones and had been at Merrill Lynch since 2000. He joins as senior vice president.

An 11-year industry veteran, Powell began his career at uVest financial before moving to Smith Barney. He had been with Merrill Lynch since 2009 and joins Hilliard Lyons as vice president.

Gauthier has 13 years of experience having started at Merrill Lynch in 1999.

The group is joined by their client associates Ann Lamb and Kelly Maumenee and will report to complex manager Sam Hershberger.
