The Securities and Exchange Commissionpromoted George Canellos, currently Deputy Director of the Division of Enforcement, as Acting Director. The appointment is effective February 8.

Canellos has been the division’s Deputy Director since June 2012 and served as Director of the SEC’s New York Regional Office from July 2009 to June 2012, overseeing 400 enforcement attorneys, accountants, investigators, and compliance examiners. Previously, Canellos spent more than six years as a litigation partner at the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP.

“George is highly respected for his intellect, prosecutorial instincts, and commitment to tough and fair enforcement of the federal securities laws,” said Robert Khuzami, Director of the Division of Enforcement, who is leaving the SEC on February 8.

In addition, the SEC has named David Bergers, Director of the SEC’s Boston Regional Office, as Acting Deputy Director of the Enforcement Division, effective February 8. Bergers has headed the SEC’s Boston Regional Office since 2006.

“Having worked at the SEC for 13 years, he has a deep understanding of the division, agency, and laws we enforce,” stated SEC Chairman Elisse Walter. “And, he has a true appreciation for the significant impact that the work of the SEC has on investors.”
