Citi Private Bank Names Global Chief Strategist

Citi Private Bank has looked to its own bench to find a new global chief strategist.

Steven Wieting, managing director and U.S. economist in Citi Research, was named to the position and will be responsible for formulating investment views and strategies for the business and its clients around the world, Citi Private Bank announced Tuesday.

Wieting will report to Eduardo Martinez Campos, global head of Investments at Citi Private Bank, and will remain based in New York, Citi said.

Wieting joined Smith Barney in 1996 and was appointed lead economist for Citigroup’s U.S. Institutional Equities business in 2000. In this role, Wieting advised Citi’s institutional investor and government clients globally on using macro developments to guide their portfolio decisions. He also served as economic advisor to the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Global Investment Committee until early 2013 and was a voting member of predecessor Asset Allocation Committees at Citi.

Prior to joining Smith Barney, Wieting was an economics correspondent with Dow Jones, and he also served as a contributor to the Wall Street Journal’s “Credit Markets” column. And prior to that, he worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

“Steven is an economist, investment professional and thought leader of the highest caliber, and we are happy to bring his extensive experience at Citi and elsewhere to this pivotal role in the private bank,” Campos said in a statement.

“My time as U.S. economist was very professionally rewarding and I look forward to bringing the experience I’ve gained to the private bank, and working with bankers, investment professionals and others to advise our global clients,” Wieting added.
