HighTower Gears Up for Growth

HighTower wrapped up a recent round of financing and added two former managers from Morgan Stanley as it eyes the next stage of expansion.

The hybrid firm, which has added 11 large advisor teams in the past year, has brought on Thomas H. Brown and Frank Epinger. Brown will serve as executive director and relationship manager for the east coast region and Epinger will have the same role for the west coast. Their mandate is to help deploy new funds as they focus on recruiting and building out the HighTower footprint.

“Tom and Frank are proven experts at identifying and growing client-centric advisor teams,” Mike Papedis, executive vice president of HighTower, said in a statement. “They will play key roles in our business development initiatives as HighTower expands with new teams and offices across the country.”

Brown, who will operate out of the New York office, was most recently co-founder of the advisor coaching firm Black Valley Consulting. He began his career in 1995 at Citigroup Global Markets and served as assistant to the northeast division director of Smith Barney, where he helped to oversee more than 3,500 advisors producing some $200 million in revenue. He also spent two years at UBS where he was head of national recruiting before he returned to Smith Barney as a branch manager in 2006.

In Los Angeles, Epinger will bring to bear more than two decades of experience to help grow the firm’s presence in the West. He began his career in 1989 and had been with Morgan Stanley for the past 13 years. He was most recently a complex manager in Pasadena, Calif., and also served as a branch manager in Los Angeles and Sherman Oaks, Calif.

“Our focus is on strategic growth and enabling advisors to realize the benefits of independence and sophistication through multiple channels,” Elliot Weissbluth, chief executive officer of HighTower, said. “The strength of the HighTower model is validated by the renewed support from our incumbent investors, who recognize a very clear and profitable vision for HighTower well into the future.”

Based in Chicago, the firm has brought on 37 teams since its inception in 2008 and currently operates 25 offices in 13 states.
