Stocks Close Lower Despite Improving Jobs Data

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 31.26 points Thursday to close at 12,573.27 while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended off 6.69 points and 21.79 points, respectively.

In economic news, the Labor Department reported that new unemployment claims fell by 26,000 claims last week, its lowest level in more than four years.

  • Today's top five contributors to The Dow's movement and their point contribution: MCD (18.16), PG (17.41), MRK (12.87), PFE (2.50), BA (1.44).
  • Today's bottom five laggards: IBM (-16.35), MMM (-10.90), AXP (-8.70), KO (-6.21), MSFT (-5.07).
  • Down 11.23% from its record close of 14164.53 on October 09, 2007.
  • Up 1.09% from 52 weeks ago.
  • Up 3.90% from its 2012 closing low of 12101.46 on June 04, 2012.
  • Down 5.32% from its 52-week high of 13279.32 on May 01, 2012.
  • Up 18.00% from its 52-week low of 10655.30 on October 03, 2011.
  • Month-to-date: down 2.38%.
  • Year-to-date: up 2.91%.
