Stocks Seesaw Ahead of Jobs Report

It was a mixed bag for stocks Thursday as investors awaited much-anticipated non-farm payroll figures due out Friday morning, one week after the Labor Department reported an unsettling spike in jobless claims.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial average closed off 25.65 points to 12,020.03 and the S&P 500 trimmed 2.38 points to finish at 1,244.58.20.

Dow Jones Industrial average:

-- Down 25.65 points, or 0.21%, to 12020.03

-- First drop in four trading days.

-- An intraday high of 12062.64 occurred at 10:04:40 today, representing an increase of 16.96 points, or 0.14%.

-- An intraday low of 11974.62 occurred at 13:00:03 today, representing a decrease of 71.06 points, or 0.59%.

-- Nine of the 30 component stocks rose, 20 fell, one was unchanged.

-- Today's top five contributors to The Dow's movement and their point contribution: BA (17.33), IBM (10.97), KFT (2.65), HPQ (2.04), DIS (1.06).

-- Today's bottom five laggards: TRV (-9.16), CAT (-8.02), CVX (-7.49), MMM (-5.60), XOM (-4.92).

-- Today’s trading range of 88.02 points, is its lowest since October 28, 2011.

-- Down 2144.50 points, or 15.14% from its record close of 14164.53 on October 9, 2007.

-- Up 5.79% from 52 weeks ago.

-- Up 83.59% from its 12-year closing low of 6547.05 on March 9, 2009.

-- Down 6.17% from its 2011 closing high of 12810.54 on April 29.

-- Up 12.81% from its 2011 closing low of 10655.30 on October 3.

-- Year-to-date: up 3.82%.

-- DJIA crossed zero 35 times during today's trading session.
