TD Ameritrade has hired Scott Collins as director of advisor transitions.

The company announced Tuesday that he will replace Jeff Zabel, who has been in the role since 2006. Zabel, originally from Seattle, decided to relocate to the West Coast with his family, and will serve as regional sales director there.

Drawing from nearly 20 years of experience in the advisory industry, Collins will lead recruiting and consulting efforts to brokers and advisors considering becoming a hybrid or fee-only independent RIA.

His responsibilities include a focus on developing tools, resources and consulting advice to enhance the advisor experience when making the transition to the independent advisor channel.

“We are fortunate to have Scott fill the vacancy and help us continue our breakaway broker recruitment success,” said Pete Dorsey, managing director of sales, TD Ameritrade Institutional. “As an experienced sales professional, consultant and former financial advisor, Scott brings a tremendous depth of knowledge and understanding of the advisor mindset and needs to the Advisor Transitions Team.”

Prior to joining TD Ameritrade, Collins was managing partner and CEO of FirstPoint Partners, a boutique consulting firm for advisors transitioning to become independent.

Collins began his career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, then spent 13 years at LPL Financial in a variety of recruiting roles, before breaking away in 2011 and co-founding First Point.

“Scott’s experience and background is a perfect fit we look to take our hybrid advisor strategy to the next level,” Dorsey said.
