Editor's Letter: A Look Ahead to 2013

A new year begins and On Wall Street looks to who will influence the wealth industry in 2013 and what the financial markets will hold. This month we start off with prognostications from the financial gurus in "A Promising 2013" by contributor Elizabeth Wine. Here, we gather the wisdom of various investment strategists on where the smart money should go, whether it is real estate or the so-called "Global Gorilla" stocks of companies with extensive international reach.

In keeping with that international theme, Managing Editor Lorie Konish delves into emerging markets fixed income in a "Five Questions" interview with Luz Padilla, senior portfolio manager at DoubleLine Funds. Padilla discusses the misconceptions about emerging markets and also points to the growth areas in fixed income.

Our cover story by Associate Editor Mason Braswell focuses on the programs that seek military veterans and train them to become the next generation of financial advisors. The industry move addresses the problem of replacing the aging advisory force, since so many baby boomers still dominate the workplace. It also provides a great profession for our returning heroes.

Our second feature, "The 10 Power Players for 2013," offers up the personalities who we think will have the biggest influence on the industry in the New Year. They range from regulators to lawyers to the heads of private client groups and recruiting leaders at several firms to a newly-elected political figure. Let us know if you agree or disagree.

On a personal note, this is my last issue at the helm of On Wall Street after eight years. I am leaving for a new position at another firm. I had a wonderful time running this brand. There were a lot of late nights on deadline and planes to catch, but also a lot of excitement. We created the Branch Managers of the Year awards (with the help of our sponsor New York Life/MainStay Investments), the Top 40 Advisors Under 40, the Women Advisors Forums and our online video series, AdvisorTV. I am so proud of this brand and I leave it in the able hands of Managing Editor Lorie Konish. I will miss all of you who read the magazine and viewed the website. It was my pleasure to be the editor of On Wall Street. I wish all of you and your loved ones the very best.
