Fidelity Selects Lawson As FMR Corp. President

Fidelity Investments has named Rodger A. Lawson, a longtime executive with Prudential Financial, president of the firm's holding company, FMR Corp.

Up until the spring, when he stepped down from the post, Lawson was vice chairman at Prudential, responsible for the international insurance and investments division. Before that, he was executive vice president at the firm. Prior to joining Prudential in 1996, Lawson was president and chief executive officer of VanEck Global and president and chief executive officer of global private banking and mutual funds for Bankers Trust.

Lawson is returning to Fidelity, as he headed the company's retail operations as managing director and chief executive officer from 1985 to 1991. Before that, he was president and chief executive officer of Dreyfus Service Corp.

Lawson will assume his new post on Aug. 6 and report to Fidelity Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward "Ned" C. Johnson. Since leaving Fidelity, Johnson said, Lawson "has significantly broadened his experience at Prudential and elsewhere, and we believe he is the right person for the job."

While Johnson will continue to oversee Fidelity Management & Research Co., Pyramis Global Advisors, Devonshire Investors and the firm's administrative function, Lawson will be in charge of Fidelity Employer Servcies Co., Fidelity Investments Distributions and Operations Co. and Fidelity Technology Group.

Managers Investment Taps Kinne as Partner, COO

Managers Investment Group, an independently managed subsidiary of Affiliated Managers Group, has hired Keitha Kinne as managing partner and chief operating officer. An executive with extensive product management, distribution and operations experience at a number of leading investment management firms, Kinne will have broad operating responsibilities.

Kinne comes to the firm from Legg Mason, where she held a number of senior distribution and product management positions, including one in which she led a key account team. Before that, she was managing director and global head of product at Citigroup Asset Management. She has also worked for Prudential Financial, PaineWebber and Kidder Peabody. She began her career in the corporate financial and systems management departments at General Electric.

FRC Veteran Brown Launches Research Firm

Chris J. Brown, an authority on the retirement income, IRA rollover and defined contribution markets, well-known for his work at Financial Research Corp. as vice president, director of retirement market research, has launched his own financial services market research company, Sway Research. Brown, whose is assuming the title of principal, was most recently managing director of the wealth management practice at Cogent Research.

Sway Research's main focus will be to help clients develop retirement income products and services; distribute asset management services through investment-only platforms, such as 401(k) plans, sub-advisory arrangements and separately managed accounts; and keep abreast of trends in the IRA rollover market. Sway Research will also offer custom research and consulting, event speaking and onsite strategy sessions. Sway's first research report, scheduled for publication in November, will examine firms' investment-only sales and marketing.
