Stocks End Week on Sour Note

The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 89.23 points Friday to close out the week at 12,801.23 – a rare losing session through the first six weeks of the year.

Tech stocks finally cooled off a bit too, dragging the Nasdaq down 23.35 points to 2,903.88 while the S&P 500 tumbled 9.31 points to close at 1,342.64.

It didn’t help that the Commerce Department reported the nation’s trade deficit expanded slightly more than expected to $48.8 billion in December, higher than economists’ consensus forecast of $48 billion.

Also, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index dipped to 72.5, two points lower than the 74.5 score most pundits had predicted.
