One of my marketing strategies has been to blog a couple of times per week. I also post to the Finance for Teachers Facebook page, primarily to engage followers.

Blogging requires a commitment, but if approached the correct way, it should not be a burden. Some of the challenges I have come across have been related to setting aside time, generating ideas and making sure my information is relevant to my target market.

Here are a few tips that are currently helping me.

Create a blog calendar. My intern set mine up for me about a month ago; it includes single posts, short series (both written and video) and topics that are relevant to teachers but not about finance. This six-month calendar prevents me from having to use creative energy every week to come up with post ideas, and I can write content weeks in advance if I want to.

Vary the media. Recently I have been shooting a four-part video blog series on 403(b) investing, although I'm only releasing one of those per week. On other days, I work on written posts. I know that some people prefer video to text; others can read faster than they can watch a video. By varying my content delivery, I can attract various types of blog readers.

Know your audience (and their problems). I know teachers. I am married to one, I socialize with them every week and I have been speaking with them professionally for more than two years. I’ve come to understand their problems and know how I can help solve them. The key for me is making sure that I put that understanding clearly into my blog posts, so readers quickly understand how I can solve many of their financial problems.
