When presented with a choice of six ways to fix
Two-thirds of over 1,020 randomly called respondents said it was “a good idea” to require “higher-income workers to pay Social Security taxes on all of their wages.” Sixty-eight percent said it was a good idea to limit benefits for wealthy retirees.
While answers to the first question were the same as they were five years ago, the percentage of people voting for limiting benefits on the wealthy dropped 5% since 2005.
Almost half of the respondents thought it was a good idea to “further reduce the total amount of benefits a person would receive if they retired early,” 39% said the same about reducing retirement benefits for people who are currently under 55, 35% liked the option of increasing the eligibility age and about the same amount liked increased Social Security taxes.
When the results were broken down by political affiliation, Democrats most strongly favored requiring higher income workers to pay Social Security taxes on all of their wages (79%) and limiting benefits for the wealthy retirees (71%). They were followed by Independents and then Republicans. The Republicans reported the lowest percentages for all the options, except being a hair ahead on reducing benefits for everyone under 55.
