The Great Gloom: American workers are unhappier than ever

Feeling despondent about your job and not sure where your career is going? While the January blues are undoubtedly playing a part, they're not entirely to blame for the so-called "Great Gloom".

According to new research, Americans are unhappier than ever, with 77% sharing they are dissatisfied with how things are going in the country, politically, economically and socially.

Specifically, job satisfaction has dropped by 9% since the beginning of 2023, 10 times faster than the previous three years.

Construction workers are the happiest followed by tech workers. That said, the latter are expected to become less happy this year. One reason for this volatility can be attributed to the mass layoffs across the sector in 2023 taking effect as HR teams struggle to rehire tech talent to cope with the growing demand in certain areas including AI and cybersecurity.

However, it's not all bad news as the finance industry is one of the happier industries, ranking third, thanks to hybrid and flexible work arrangements which has facilitated greater work-life balance.

Non-profits and the food and beverage industry nabbed the fourth and fifth spots.

Finance workers are also more engaged in their jobs and feel positive about decision-making and the leadership at their companies.

If the above doesn't resonate, it could be time for you to reconsider your current role and if your career is on the right path. If not, it could be time to look for a new opportunity in a company that is committed to fostering positive employee experiences.

If that is the case, the Financial Planning Job Board is the perfect place to start your search. It features thousands of openings across the finance industry, including the three below.
