Top 8 Asset Manager Apps for Advisors

As more and more people –investors and advisors alike – turn to mobile devices and online applications for investment information and resources, many financial services firms have developed tablet applications to provide just that. Bill Winterberg, advisor technology expert of fppad.com, has put together a list of the top eight apps for advisors from investment and asset managers.

Though many additional firms, from Morgan Stanley to UBS and Credit Suisse, have created similar applications, Winterberg’s list excludes those apps with login and subscription requirements.

1. Invesco US

One of the most visually appealing apps in the list, Invesco US for iPad includes a mutual fund finder tool, an interactive wheel to view the company’s product categories, Twitter news feed, and written and video investment insight summaries. The app also features content from Invesco Consulting, with a variety of practice management resources targeted to financial professionals.

2. Schwab Mobile from The Charles Schwab Corporation

This iPad app provides market updates from the Schwab Center for Financial Research periodically throughout the trading day, plus articles aggregated from a variety of media outlets including MarketWatch and AP. The app is primarily for use by Schwab’s retail clients that can use the app for banking and brokerage activity, but the market overview information can provide a useful snapshot of each trading day to financial advisors.

3. Fidelity Investments for iPad

Like Schwab Mobile, Fidelity Investments for iPad is designed for the retail audience. Nevertheless, financial advisors should find the interactive menus useful to access market news and insights, video content from Reuters, and Fidelity Viewpoints featuring opinions from Fidelity portfolio managers and more.

4. Vanguard – Advisors for iPad

From one of the world’s largest asset managers, Vanguard – Advisors for iPad allows advisors to quickly search among the company’s ETF and mutual fund products, read research and market commentary articles, and watch videos on a variety of content from estate planning to “fiscal cliff” ramifications. The app also ties in the company’s real-time Twitter feed for advisors.

5. PIMCO

Advisors can use the iPad app from PIMCO to read commentary from leading managers including Bill Gross and Mohamed El-Erian. The app offers an easy way to navigate through written articles on investment outlooks and strategies, but it lacks the multimedia content found elsewhere and a search tool to filter among the company’s portfolio of investment products.

6. Franklin Templeton (US) for iPad

From Franklin Templeton Investments, this app lets advisors search through the company’s product portfolio using a graphic that resembles a periodic table. Several videos are also included that offer global investment perspectives from company portfolio managers who speak to a variety of economic topics. Tapping the settings icon in the top-right corner lets advisors view other Franklin Templeton media, including the company YouTube page, Facebook profile, and Twitter feed.

7. Legg Mason International for iPad

Though not specifically intended for the United States audience, Legg Mason International for iPad offers a collection written articles, videos, and audio webcast replays with insight applicable to the global marketplace. Information on Legg Mason’s international portfolio of products can be viewed from within the app, but again, details on products available in the United States are excluded.

8. Natixis Research

Natixis, the financial services arm of France’s Groupe BPCE provides access to free written commentary on economic research in its iPad app, much of it with a focus on the Euro zone. However, access to expanded information on credit and equity research requires a subscription.
