The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. has appointed Todd Cranford as its new director of government relations along with Gail Reisman as director of marketing.

Both are newly created positions within the organizations. 

The director of government relations position will advocate CFP's public policy positions before Congress, the executive branch of the federal government, state legislatures and other state governmental offices, according to a statement by the firm. The position reports to the managing director for Public Policy & Communications. 

CFP Board Chief Executive Officer Kevin Keller continued: “Championing CFP Board’s legislative and regulatory goals before policymakers is key to fulfilling its mission of promoting the value of professional, competent and ethical financial planning services for the benefit of the public. In his new position, Todd Cranford will undoubtedly help give CFP Board’s stakeholders an even stronger voice in Washington.” 

Prior to joining CFP Board, Cranford -- who earned obtained a law degree from Columbia University in New York City and his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College -- worked at Patton Boggs, LLP in Washington, D.C. He previously served as senior counsel on the Committee on Financial Services of the U.S. House of Representatives, advising former Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and members of the Committee on policy and legal issues related to capital markets and securities. In addition, he also held as senior counsel in the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he investigated, developed and instituted civil and administrative actions involving violations of federal securities laws. 

“We are delighted to bring aboard someone with Todd’s legal, legislative and advocacy experience,” said Marilyn Mohrman-Gillis, CFP Board’s managing director for public policy and communications, in a statement. “His time at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as well as his years spent on Capitol Hill immersed in the legislative process make him well-positioned to advocate for greater access for all Americans to competent and ethical financial planning.” 

Meanwhile, Reisman, as the new director of marketing, will work toward increasing the number of CFP professionals, retaining existing CFP professionals and increasing consumer awareness of within the CFP industry. The position reports to the managing director of marketing and business development. 

Reisman previously served as vice president of advertising at Brand USA in Washington, D.C., and spent over a decade at Amtrak. “In recent years, we’ve stepped up our efforts to encourage even more financial professionals to seek CFP certification and cultivate greater brand awareness among consumers,” said CFP Board Chief Executive Officer Kevin Keller, in a release. “The addition of this position comes at an exciting time, and we’re confident that Gail Reisman will help guide our marketing team to even greater heights.”
