Ameriprise Recruits Advisors With More Than $450M AUM

Advisors who collectively managed more than $450 million in assets have joined Ameriprise Financial's employee and independent channels, according to the firm.

Mike Schaefer and his advisor team at Waddell had roughly $153 million in assets before leaving for the Ameriprise independent arm in Hays, Kan., according to the firm. Other members of the team include Michael Berges, Dustin McWhirter, Darien Fritts and Steven Lundeen, the firm says.

In another move, former Securities America advisor Richard McMahon oversaw some $84 million in assets before his transition to the Ameriprise employee channel in Hartford, Conn., according to the firm. Prior to spending 12 years with Securities America, McMahon worked at Veravest Investments from 1984 to 2003, according to FINRA's BrokerCheck.

Additionally, Wells Fargo gave up two advisors to the employee channel at Ameriprise. Brian Duelfer, who managed slightly more than $97 million in assets, is based in Center Valley, Pa., according to Ameriprise. James Motteler, who managed about $71 million in total assets at the time of his departure from the wirehouse, joined Ameriprise in Campbell, Calif., the firm said.

Before joining Wells in 2009, both Duelfer and Motteler worked for Citigroup from 2004 to 2009. Prior to that, Duelfer had worked for Morgan Stanley, dating back to 1987. Motteler previously had worked at A.G. Edwards & Sons, according to BrokerCheck records.

LPL also lost an advisor to the employee channel. Ralph Freibart, who was managing about $61 million in client assets, joined Ameriprise in New Orleans, according to the firm. Freibart will report to branch manager Thomas Linn.
