Stocks Closed Mixed As U.S. Economy Continues to Shows Signs of Life

The Dow Jones Industrial Average trimmed 13 points to finish at 12,449.45 while tech stocks continued their recent resurgence on the heels of a pair of encouraging economic reports.

The Nasdaq moved up 8 points to 2,710.76 while the S&P 500 inched up 0.40 points to close at 1,292.48.

The  U.S. economy grew at a moderate pace in late November and December as consumer spending picked up, according to the Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book report.

Weekly mortgage applications also increased in the first week of the year as demand for both purchases and refinancing moved higher, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Also, Treasury prices built on their gains after government auctioned $21 billion in 10-year notes at high yield of 1.9% and bid-to-cover of 3.29. The government is scheduled to auction $13 billion in 30-year bonds later this week.
