And Now ... A $33 Billion Drop in Money Market Funds

Assets in money market mutual fund assets decreased by $33.2 billion, in the week ended Dec. 15, the Investment Company Institute said Thursday.

The news comes two days after Morningstar, the mutual fund data reporting company, said money market funds were the bright spot in funds, bringing in $24.7 billion in November.

By Morningstar's count, long-term stock funds lost $4.0 billion in November and municipal bond funds lost $7.6 billion.

The total invested in money market funds fell to $2.803 trillion in the week ended Wednesday, December 15, the ICI reported.

Assets of institutional money market funds decreased by $33.76 billion to $1.863 trillion. Money in retail money market funds actually increased $530 million, to $939.53 billion.

Taxable government funds decreased by $8.05 billion, taxable non-government funds decreased by $24.08 billion, and tax-exempt funds decreased by $1.09 billion.
