Federated Stays In-House, Fills Four Executive Slots

Federated Investors has appointed CIO William D. Dawson as vice chairman of its investment advisory companies and named three portfolio managers as CIOs.

CFA charterholder Dawson will advise President and CEO Keith M. Schappert, continue heading up Federated's macro economy view and work on new product possibilities. The three portfolio managers, Deborah A. Cunningham, Mary Jo Oschson and Robert J. Ostrowski, will be CIOs of money markets, tax-exempt fixed income and taxable fixed income, respectively.

Dawson has been with Federated for 28 years, while the three new CIOs bring a combined 60 years of investment experience to their new positions at Federated.

NorthStar Board Adds Gula, Vielehr, Freyberg

Three high-profile executives were added to NorthStar's advisory board, the company announced.

Allen J. Gula of Franklin Resources, Byron Vielehr, formerly of Merrill Lynch, and Richard Freyberg, formerly of Schwab, were all named to the board of the wealth management firm.

Gula, who still serves as advisor to the office of the chairman at Franklin, had also been Franklin's president and CIO previously. He served as executive vice president while at KeyCorp. and has more than 28 years of financial services industry experience.

Vielehr recently served as the chief technology officer at Merrill's U.S. private client group and has worked as a vice president for Strong Capital Management.

Freyberg, the 30-year financial services veteran, has left his position as CIO of Schwab Capital Markets and senior vice president of Schwab Services for Investment Managers to serve on the NorthStar board.

Vega Taps BlackRock Exec Sobti For Double Duty

Rajiv Sobti, the co-head of BlackRock Financial Management's investment strategy group, will leave the company to head up both North American trading and a large hedge fund at Vega Asset Management.

Sobti spent six years at BlackRock after a 10-year reign at Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, where he served as managing director and head of quantitative research.

"Rajiv is a recognized industry leader who brings a combination of experience managing a broad array of assets, extensive expertise in fixed income, entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his work," said Jon Berg, Vega CEO.

Dubin & Swieca Names Ex-Goldman Director as Prez

The former managing director of Goldman Sachs Asset Management is now president of Dubin & Swieca Capital Management.

Tracy McHale Stuart, who also served as head of global multi-manager strategies at Goldman Sachs, joins the New York-based fund-of-funds firm just weeks after the company named former Blackstone executive Anthony Anselmo as CEO and COO. "I'm excited to be leading the effort to broaden Dubin & Swieca Capital Management's business, to establish new investment and client relationships, and to further institutionalize all investment management, research and operational activities of the firm," Stuart said.
