Morningstar Appoints Four Executives at Ibbotson

Morningstar has hired four executives to work at its Ibbotson Associates subsidiary, all of whom are transferring directly from Morningstar or who previously worked at the company earlier on in their careers.

Liz Michaels has joined Ibbotson as vice president of advice services, Michele Gambera as senior research consultant and chief economist, James Xiong as research consultant and Bo Yuan as chief technology officer.

Michaels previously was associate dean and director of career advising and planning services at the University of Chicago and before that, president of Jellyvision, an interactive software development studio. Between 1991 and 1996, she worked at Morningstar, developing financial planning and analytical tools for the adviser and institutional markets. She did the same at Ibbotson between 1989 and 1991.

Gambera is moving to Ibbotson from Morningstar, where he worked as chief economist, helping develop mathematical and statistical models for the company's retirement investment advice methodology. Before that, he taught international macroeconomics at West Virginia University and was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Xiong also is transferring to Ibbotson from Morningsar, where he was a quantitative analyst. Before that, he was a researcher at a number of institutions, including Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Houston.

Yuan comes to Ibbotson from Lighthouse Partners, an investment management firm, where he headed and developed information technology projects. He has also served as a senior technologist at Citadel Investment Group and as the director of software engineers at Morningstar, creating investment advice software products and services.
