Broadmark Lands Cortez As Distribution President

Broadmark Asset Management has hired Ricardo L. Cortez as president of global distribution.

"Broadmark is very fortunate to land a professional of Rick's caliber," said Chris Guptill, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of Broadmark.

"He brings his unique expertise in alternative and absolute return investing to a marketplace starved for exceptional alternative investment management. He will be instrumental in product development and strategic placement distribution. We couldn't be more pleased," Guptill said.

A 25-year veteran of investment management, Cortex spent the past eight years as president of the private client group for Torrey Associates. Before that, he was vice president at Goldman Sachs and product manager for its external money manager program, global multi-manager strategies. In the 11 years prior, he was a senior vice president overseeing product development, communications, and sales at Prudential Investments' investment management services division.

Affiliated Managers Hires Germain for Global Sales

Affiliated Managers Group has hired Joseph A. Germain as a managing director of global distribution. In this newly created post, he is to work on a consultative basis with AMG's affiliates to improve institutional marketing and global product distribution. Germain will also work with AMG's London and Sydney offices to distribute products through global pension consulting firms.

Germain comes to AMG from Lehman Brothers Asset Management, where he was chief operating officer and head of business development in the quantitative investment group. Before that, he was a team leader for developing Lehman's global consultant relations.

kasina Contines to Grow With Hiring of Analyst

As kasina continues to respond to the challenges the financial services industry is facing in the wake of the credit crisis, it has hired Julia Binder as a research analyst. She has 25 years of experience working in online services and e-business for industry leaders, including Congressional Quarterly, Lexis-Nexis and IBM. Binder most recently was director of e-commerce at Calvert Investments, where she built award-winning websites for nine years.

"Julia's history in successful asset management e-business initiatives will bring a greater perspective and insight to kasina's comprehensive research agenda," said Steven Miyao, chief executive officer of kasina. "We are thrilled to add Julia to the kasina family."

Hassara Becomes Head of TIAA-CREF Institutional Client Service

TIAA-CREF has appointed Teresa Hassara senior managing director and head of institutional client services, overseeing 15,000 retirement plan sponsors in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields.

She comes to the company from Fidelity Investments, where she worked for 17 years, most recently as senior vice president, investment services, in charge of developing strategies for Fidelity's mutual funds. She also led investment product management and development for Fidelity's European operations.

Before that, she was director of client services at Bankers Trust and began her career at First Pennsylvania Bank.

"Teresa's experience serving defined contribution plan clients and managing relationships across client segments and businesses makes her well qualified to meet the needs of TIAA-CREF's institutional clients and their plans' participating employees," said Maliz Beams, executive vice president and head of client services for TIAA-CREF.
