Hedge Fund Founder Named CIO of Eastern Bank Wealth Management

Eastern Bank has named former hedge fund founder Michael Tyler chief investment officer of its wealth management division. Tyler reports to William Walsh, senior vice president and director of Eastern Bank Wealth Management.

Prior to joining Boston-based Eastern, Tyler managed West Shore Investment Management, a long/short equity hedge fund he founded in San Francisco. Tyler spent a good portion of his 25-year career in the financial services industry with Wellington Management Company in Boston, where he served as a partner, portfolio manager and equity analyst from 1986 to 2002.  While there, he built the firm’s telecom investment practice and managed mutual funds specializing in the global telecom industry, according to Eastern Bank.

The bank did not return calls for additional information on the appointment, which was announced Thursday.

Eastern Bank has $8 billion in assets. It is the largest independent and mutually owned bank in New England, the bank said in the announcement.
