HighMark Gives a Boost to Bond Team

In a move that “further enhances the fixed-income capabilities of the firm,” Highmark Capital Management has hired Jeffrey Klein as VP and portfolio manager for its Fixed Income Group, the Union Bank subsidiary said Tuesday.

He will report to Jack Montgomery, director of fixed-income management at the San Francisco-based firm.

Klein was most recently with Bishop Street Capital Management where he was a senior VP and lead portfolio manager for the firm’s institutional accounts, according to an Oct. 5 statement. He was also a part of the firm’s portfolio team that managed mutual fund assets.

Officials at Bishop Street could not immediately be reached for details regarding a replacement for him at the firm, however.

Collectively, Klein has more than 18-years of experience in the bond market. This also includes time spent at Halbis Capital Management, the institutional asset management division of HSBC. While there, he was the co-head of U.S. Fixed-Income and head of Credit Management. Prior to this, he worked at Dodge & Cox, where he was a member of several committees at the firm.

In the statement, Montgomery acknowledged that Klein’s expertise in corporate credit and fixed-income strategy enhances the firm’s research capabilities.

“We value both his investment experiences, as well as his leadership skills, and expect that he’ll be a valuable contributor immediately, especially given the current global economic environment,” he said.

HighMark offers its expertise to both institutional and mutual clients. The firm has over $17 billion in assets under management, according to the statement.
