Merrill Lynch Investment Unit Gets New Executives

Merrill Lynch & Co. of New York announced in a statement today that it has appointed Robert C. Doll as global chief investment officer, and Peter J. Gibbs as global chief operating officer of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, Merrill Lynchs asset management arm.

Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, which has over $550 billion under management, has regional headquarters in London, Princeton, N.J., and Tokyo. Merrill Lynch also announced the retirement of its investment management unit's joint chief operating officers, Carol Galley and Stephen Zimmerman. Zimmermans retirement will take effect June 30, while Galley will continue with the firm for the rest of the year.

Doll, who has worked in the field of fund management for 21 years, is currently co-head of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers Americas. Previously, he worked at OppenheimerFunds of New York, where he served as CIO before joining the unit in June 1999. Gibbs, who has worked in the financial-services industry for more than 20 years, joined Mercury Asset Management Group in 1989. Merrill Lynch subsequently acquired Mercury in November 1997. Gibbs is currently head of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers Europe, Middle East and Africa. Doll and Gibbs will retain their regional responsibilities in addition to their new global roles.

Galley and Zimmerman both began their careers in 1971 at Mercury Asset Management. After Merrill Lynch acquired Mercury, they joined the firms executive management committee. They were named joint chief operating officers of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers last year, when Merrill Lynch combined its asset management units into a single entity.
