NAVA General Counsel Steps Down

Tom Conner, general counsel for the National Association for Variable Annuities, has left the organization for private practice. Conner, who had been with NAVA four years, will continue to work in the area of variable products as well as mutual funds in his new role as partner at Washington, D.C. firm Sutherland, Asbill, & Brennan LLC.

In his new post, Conner will use his experience working with the NAVA membership and his understanding of the business environment of financial services companies, said Steve Roth, chair of Sutherland’s corporate and financial practices group.

Conner has not yet been replaced, but his duties are currently being handled by existing staff as NAVA conducts a search to fill the position.

"In the interim, Mike DeGeorge [also an attorney] will be picking up a lot of his projects," said Mark Mackey, president of NAVA.

While DeGeorge might be an obvious replacement for Conner, the association will be casting a wider net before naming a replacement Mackey said. "We will be interviewing people and Mike, among others, will be considered."
