Do you ever look out of your window and imagine being at the beach? Do you wish you could fast-forward through Wall Street's looming rainy season and get to something a little sunnier?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

Our special look back at the Future Proof Festival continues through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

In this clip, Wealthtech Reporter Justin L. Mack catches up with Nick Thacker, senior vice president of enterprise sales for Herndon, Virginia-based financial services software and consulting provider Skience.

At Future Proof 2022, Skience presented on the main stage as participants in the first Future Proof FinTechX Demo Drop. Selected by a committee of industry experts from a pool of more than 100 applicants, Future Proof's FintechX presenters were selected on creativity, outside-the-box thinking and the ability to create a real impact for attendees of the festival.

Officials said winners all demonstrated to the committee that they are taking novel approaches to chronic issues facing the financial services industry and the investors it serves. During the event, the Skience team showed off "Surveillance," a highly configurable self-service compliance solution for enterprise wealth management firms.

But beyond the inaugural Demo Drop presentation, Thacker said Skience was on site to figure out where advisors need help and come to the rescue with a fresh idea.

"I think the biggest takeaway for today is really the idea that (we're) arming advisors and their firms for the next transfer of wealth … and making business easy," he said. "That's something that a lot of firms that I talk to … the banks, the broker-dealers, RIAs, you have to make it seamless and easy. Just like what we do with Netflix, Apple and Amazon. It's got to be that easy.

"We're all about getting 1% better every day. And I think we take that energy to enable advisors that we work with, to try and build cool technology, help them with their strategy and actually help them grow."

Thacker says when working with wealth managers, his team often talks about desired outcomes and works backward to reverse engineer that result. The process sparks excitement on both ends of the interaction.

"When advisors actually outline what they're going to do and how they want to interact with their customers, that's what gets them jazzed up because everyone wants to grow," Thacker said. "But to make sure that you're different than everyone else, you've got to have some secret sauce. So everyone's got a little bit of a different sauce they're delivering."
