Is the looming threat of winter's coldest stretch getting you down? Do you seek an escape from the harsh, frigid conditions on Wall Street?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

Kick off the new year with a special look at the Future Proof Festival through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

In this clip, Wealthtech Reporter Justin L. Mack caught up with Reggie Tucker, managing director of venture capital at Manhattan West. The Los Angeles-based, minority-owned RIA serves entertainers, athletes and ultrahigh net worth clients.

Like many who hit the beach for the event, Tucker was excited to connect with fellow industry leaders in a more casual setting that put people before products. He was also eager to do so at a time when market volatility meant the need for more creative problem solving, and finding opportunity where others see roadblocks.

"This is a movie that we've been part of before. I'm an old, former, reformed trader. So I started my career on Wall Street back in the 90s … traded through the rise and the fall of NASDAQ and saw all the carnage there. Traded through full cycles in the market. So we understand dislocations, and we've seen the opportunities that they can create," he said. "And another way we're just sourcing opportunities and managing risk is partnering with people that are experts in their space. I think over the last few years, when the market was frothy, you know, we brought in a lot of what we like to call tourists into the market that don't fully understand and appreciate the spaces that they're operating in.

"We're looking to partner with folks that intimately understand the pace and spaces that they're operating in. And so they know how to identify true opportunities, they know how to value those opportunities correctly. And they know when the market is creating opportunities for outsized returns."

But Mack and Tucker also spent a few moments talking about "R. Tucker," the industry vet's artist alter ego. Under that moniker, Tucker founded the Recycled Abstract platform through which he creates visual and audio art shaped by his perspective as a Black man in America.

Tucker said he has been creating for years but just recently started sharing his work with the world. When Future Proof was rolling, Tucker had just wrapped his first show in Los Angeles, and was preparing for a fall show in Santa Monica.

"It's an alter ego, but it actually overlaps with a number of the things that I'm doing and seeing on the venture side as well," Tucker said.
