Since Safeco began raising scholarship money for the university in 2001, the company has provided 199 scholarships. Safeco Chairman Mike McGavick, himself a graduate of the University of Washington, said his company has pledged to raise the scholarship money as a way of giving back to the community. "When a person of great potential receives an education, the benefits multiply," McGavick said. "The students success can inspire his or her family, classmates and friends. So when you help students of promise, you also help the community at large."
