Tru Independence president Amit Dogra knows compliance makes advisors 'itchy and scratchy'

Wealthtech Reporter Justin L. Mack chats with Tru Independence President and Chief Operating Officer Amit Dogra at Future Proof 2022.

Do you ever look out of your window and imagine being at the beach? Do you wish you could fast-forward through Wall Street's looming rainy season and get to something a little sunnier?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

Our special look back at the Future Proof Festival continues through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

In this clip, Wealthtech Reporter Justin L. Mack chats with Amit Dogra, president and and Chief Operating Officer of Portland, Oregon-based RIA service platform Tru Independence. The firm closed 2022 by announcing partnerships with the $640 million Channel Wealth and the $250 million Invenio Wealth Partners.

Tru also added more than $1 billion in assets when it acquired Invenio last December, bringing its total assets to $9 billion.

But in the late summer sun at Future Proof 2022, Dogra was excited to dive into some of the topics that make advisors the most uncomfortable. Chief among those topics is compliance.

"I love talking about compliance because most advisors don't want to do it, (and) that's what we do. And when you start talking about what makes an advisor kind of itchy and scratchy about this business, compliance is at the top of their list. It's one of their top two," Dogra said. "We take on that burden. And not only do we provide support, but we go so far as to be the named CCO. So our compliance team really takes that sort of concern off the advisor's plate. And that's why advisors are choosing to be here at Tru."

In addition to blocking the blitzing tackler that compliance can become, Dogra said he is eager to help firms make sense of the vendor landscape in an environment like Future Proof, where countless wealthtech firms and other service providers vied for their attention.

"You've got this wonderful conference with thousands and thousands of vendors here. But if you're an advisor trying to figure that out, that could take a year. We're going to boil that ocean down for you, no pun intended, and we're going to make it work for you," he said. "We're focused on the things that matter to you, and we want to curate it for you. No two advisors are the same, and neither are two of our solutions."

Future Proof, an event billed as the first wealth festival, attracted more than 2,200 people to Huntington Beach, California, last year. Financial Planning was a sponsor of the event. Dates for Future Proof 2023 have already been announced. The event is slated to return to the beach Sept. 10-13, 2023.
