Wasatch Goes Global

Wasatch Advisors, Inc., which has garnered much attention in the consumer press for its domestic equity portfolios, has an international equity investing team in the works. Two portfolio managers and an analyst joined the firm on March 17 and will soon begin working on a new fund offering for the Salt Lake City-based firm.

"They’ll be working on an international growth portfolio," said spokesperson Sue Leary, who left open the possibility of additional international portfolios.

Portfolio manager Michael Gerding and senior equities analyst Laura Vander Pol join Wasatch from Denver Investment Advisors. Roger Edgley, a principal at Liberty Wanger Asset Management, will move from Chicago to join the Denver-based group. The trio will report to Wasatch Director Karey Barker.

The new team’s Denver location is more than a convenience for Gerding and Vander Pol, said Leary. "There are a number of large mutual fund companies located in Denver so when an international company does a road trip, they’ll come to the state and they’ll hit some central areas," explained Leary. Furthermore, because the area remains uncrowded with fund complexes, investment staff from $6 billion Wasatch will make it onto the dance cards of those companies.

At Denver Investment Advisors, Gerding managed Westcore’s International Frontier and International Select Funds and will be replaced by co-managers Adam Schor and Kevin Beck.
