RIA Atlanta Capital Group Hires Retirement Executive From ING

Atlanta Capital Group, an independent wealth advisory firm and broker-dealer, has hired a retirement plan specialist to help grow its 401(k) plan advisory business. The retirement plan services division is the fastest growing segment of the Atlanta, Ga.-based firm.

Ross Sims will be a retirement plan specialist and managing partner.  Before joining Atlanta Capital Group, Sims was at ING Financial Advisors as regional vice president in charge of 401(k) sales for north Georgia and north Alabama. Sims joins Kevin Rainwater, who launched Atlanta Capital Group’s retirement plan division two and a half years ago.

Sims “has a great amount of knowledge and experience within the 401(k) marketplace both in dealing with plan sponsors and with participants,” Rainwater says. “So we look for him now to continue to allow us to offer the small- and medium-sized business owners a comprehensive place to go and get [their corporate] retirement plans in line” as well as helping with individual financial planning and estate planning issues for those business owner clients, he says.

One of the ways the firm is able to help business owners with their retirement plans — in addition to helping set up the plans — is by helping these plan sponsors, who are fiduciaries, manage the liability associated with those plans, Rainwater says. Managing their liability involves not just careful initial fund selection (and monitoring the performance of the funds, making changes when needed) but employee education as well, he says.

Atlanta Capital Group advises on more than $175 million in qualified plan assets in its retirement division. The firm’s wealth management division has more than $765 million in assets under management.
