Financial planner Akeiva Ellis on drawing a new generation to the industry

Is winter's coldest stretch getting you down? Do you seek an escape from the harsh, frigid conditions on Wall Street?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

This new year, unwrap a special look at the Future Proof Festival through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

In this clip, certified financial planner and 2021 FP Rising Star Award winner Akeiva Ellis shared her tips with Chief Correspondent Tobias Salinger for prospective financial advisors aiming to break into the industry. At the time, Ellis was a financial education specialist with Ballentine Partners. She's now working full time for the financial coaching service she and her husband, Meshack, launched in 2018 called The Bemused.

The husband-wife pair plan to ramp up their business by extending the reach of their "Money 180" tutorial programs onto college campuses across the country and through more collaborations with companies. Their YouTube series has already amassed 10,000 subscribers.

Ellis told Salinger the surprisingly simple way she found out about her chosen profession after she said that she had never heard of it when she was growing up. She also explained how the industry can attract more young people into a profession that sorely needs to usher in a new generation of planners to replace advisors retiring from the ranks.

Future Proof, an event billed as the first wealth festival, attracted more than 2,200 people to Huntington Beach, California, earlier this year. Financial Planning was a sponsor of the event. Dates for Future Proof 2023 have already been announced. The event is slated to return to the beach Sept. 10-13, 2023.
