Disappointing Jobs Report Sends Stocks Into Tailspin

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged another 274.88, or 2.2%, to close at 12,118.57 Friday as investors gave an authoritative thumbs-down to the latest batch of economic reports.

After rallying up 8.1% in the first quarter, the Dow has now given back all of its gains and finds itself in negative territory for the first time in 2012.

The Nasdaq lost another 79.86 points to end at 2,747.48 while the S&P 500 lopped off another 32.39 points, crashing through its 200-day moving average of 1,284 to close at 1,278.04.

Investors were most put off by a Bureau of Labor Statistics report that the U.S. economy created just 69,000 jobs in May – the fewest in a year –and the unemployment rate crept up to 8.2%.
