ETF Growth Strong in 2012

Ever popular ETFs finished 2012 on a strong note.

The combined assets of U.S. ETFs totaled just over $1.3 trillion in December 2012, according toInvestment Company Institute data.

That marks a 28% jump over the ETF asset total in December 2011, which was just over $1 trillion.

Assets in domestic equity ETFs jumped 24% to $765 billion as of December 2012 from $618 billion in December 2011, while global/international equity increased 34% to $329 billion from $245 billion. Hybrid ETFs almost doubled in size to $656 million from $377 million. Bond ETFs also increased 32% to $243 million from $184 million.

Net ETF share issuances in December 2012 totaled $33 billion, compared with $19 billion in December 2011.
