Haldeman Becomes CEO Of Freddie Mac

The board of directors of Freddie Mac has named Charles E. Haldeman, Jr. chief executive officer and a member of the board. Until June 30, Haldeman was chairman of Putnam Investments, and previously president and CEO of the firm.

Haldeman succeeds John A. Koskinen, who has been interim CEO since March 2009 and who will return to his previous position as non-executive chairman of the board.

"He has a wealth of experience in finance and an impressive record of successfully leading companies through challenging transformations. Mercer Expands Equity Research Team by Two

Mercer has hired two researchers for its investment consulting business. Clare Bryant, now a European equity researcher with Mercer, was a fund manager at New Star Asset Management. Gareth Anderson has joined to provide analytical support across a broad range of equity strategies. He was previously an investment product analyst with Schroder Investment Management.

Mains Joins Forward as CRO, Managing Director

Norman E. Mains has joined Forward Management as chief risk officer and managing director, in charge of both existing and new products, the risk committee and finding new acquisitions.

"The expertise and experience that Norman brings to our firm is critical as we expand our product lineup and continue to add to our alternative product offerings," said J. Alan Reid, chief executive officer of Forward Management.

Mains has held key positions in research, product development and administration, coming to the firm from Graystone Research, a unit of Morgan Stanley, where he was executive director and chief investment officer. The division serves high-net-worth individuals, family offices, institutions and foundations with hedge fund and other alternative investments. Previously, he was in charge of a hedge fund-of-fund division at Carr Global Advisors, executive director of product development at Dow Jones Indexes, director of research and chief economist for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, president of Rodman & Renshaw and director of research at BatemanEichler.

Mains began his career with the Investment Company Institute and then became a senior economist for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington.

He has been widely quoted in leading financial publications, appeared regularly on television to discuss financial markets and co-authored and contributed to several books on finance. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Warwick in the U.K. and earned his masters degree at the University of Colorado.

Northern Trust Chairman Osborn to Retire in Nov.

Northern Trust Chairman William A. Osborn, plans to step down on Nov. 11. Osborn, 61, who has worked for the Chicago company for 39 years and has been chairman since October 1995, will be replaced by Frederick H. Waddell, the company's chief executive officer and president.
