SEC Enforcement Chief Glozter Joins Bridgewater
Helene Glozter, co-head of enforcement in the New York office of the Securities and Exchange Commission since 2004, will be leaving the SEC this month to join Bridgewater Associates as corporate counsel and deputy chief compliance officer.
The SEC said that the 37-year-old directed a number of high-profile cases during her tenure, including charges against the former general counsel of Monster Worldwide for backdating options, a settlement with Millennium Partners for market timing mutual funds and the Martha Stewart insider-trading case.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Helene for the last 10 years," said Mark Schonfeld, director of the SEC's New York office. "The investing public has benefited tremendously from her keen intellect, sound judgment and unwavering dedication to their protection. I wish her the best of luck in her next endeavor."
Metzler/Payden Recruits Backhaus as COO, EVP
Alexander Backhaus has joined Metzler/Payden as chief operating office and executive vice president.
With nearly 20 years of experience in international securities operations, Backhaus most recently was regional chief operating officer of Commerz Asset Management Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. He also worked in key positions at Commerz International Capital Management (Japan) in Tokyo, Dresdner Bank in Frankfurt and, before that, Commerzbank in Dublin, Spain and London.
Joan Payden of Payden & Rygel and Norbert Enste of Metzler Bank, co-chairs of Metzler/Payden, issued a joint statement saying that "at this time of explosive growth at Metzler/Payden, Alex Backhaus is an important addition to the management team. His strong background in international operations will be a great asset to the organization."
OppenheimerFunds Taps Growth Investing Veteran
OppenheimerFunds has recruited growth investing veteran Ron Zibelli as vice president and portfolio manager of the Oppenheimer Discovery Fund. Formerly with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers as a managing director and small-cap growth team leader, Zibelli has more than 20 years of investment experience. Before joining Merrill, he was a co-portfolio manager at Chase Manhattan Bank.
"Ron will be a great fit for our growth investment team," said David Poiesz, senior vice president and leader of OppenheimerFunds' growth team. "He has delivered consistent investment performance in the small-cap and growth area and has demonstrated his abilities in all types of market conditions."
Along with hiring Zibelli, Oppenheimer-Funds has hired two senior research analysts who worked with him at Merrill. Justin Livengood, a vice president and fund analyst with Merrill who has eight years of investment management experience, specialized in financial services, healthcare, energy and basic materials for the small-cap growth team. Mary Dugan Sheridan, who has 23 years of experience, was a senior security analyst at Merrill specializing in small-cap consumer and business services securities.
The two join Ash Shah, who also worked with Zibelli at Merrill but who joined OppenheimerFunds ahead of them, in February 2006. Shah's specialty is technology and industrials.
"We've invested significant resources in our growth equity investments capability over the last few years," Poiesz noted. "We are confident that the experience and depth added by Ron's tem will enhance our efforts even further."
