Janus Selects Weil as CEO

Janus Capital has selected Richard M. Weil, the former chief operating officer of PIMCO, as chief executive officer.

"Dick was PIMCO's chief operating officer for nine incredibly successful years," said Janus Chairman Steve Scheid. "His accomplishments include leading the development of their global business and founding their German business. He is a proven leader with a strong vision for what makes a company and its people successful. The breadth of his leadership experience, deep understanding of the investment industry and global perspective were all factors behind the board's decision."

Weil said he decided to accept the position because he foresees a "very bright future" for Janus due to its "very strong investment culture, excellent performance and deep commitment to serving its clients through each of its Janus, INTECH and Perkins teams."

Before joining PIMCO in 1996, Weil was with Bankers Trust Global Asset Management and Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett. He succeeds interim CEO and Director Tim Armour, who has held the position since June 2009.

Celeghin, Cicero Become Partners at Casey, Quirk

Casey, Quirk & Associates has promoted Daniel Celeghin and Grace L. Cicero to partners.

Since joining the asset management consulting firm in 2002, Celeghin has focused on the alternative investment industry and developed hedge fund benchmarking frameworks. Cicero will retain her title of chief administrative officer, handing human resource and benefits administration. She also came to the company in 2002, from Barra Strategic Consulting Group. Before that, she was a program manager with General Electric.

"Daniel and Grace have made substantial contributions to our firm during the past eight years," said John F. Casey, chairman of Casey, Quirk. "We are proud to welcome them as partners."

SEC Names di Florio Director of Compliance

The Securities and Exchange Commission has named Carlo V. di Florio director of the Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations. He was previously a partner in the financial services regulatory practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he was also known for his expertise in corporate governance, enterprise risk management and regulatory compliance and ethics.

"A strong inspections and examinations unit is instrumental to the SEC's investor protection efforts," said SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro. "Investors rely on our examiners to ensure that their financial professionals comply with the law. Carlo brings the energy, insight and experience necessary to ensure that we keep pace with the rapid changes in the industry and continue to build upon the reforms of the past year."

di Florio said he was "honored to join the SEC during this critical time of financial regulatory reform.

Calamos Selects Sales, Investment Presidents

Calamos Asset Management has named Nick Calamos president of investments and Jim Boyle president of distribution and operations.

Calamos was previously senior executive vice president. He will retain the title of co-chief investment officer. Boyle was previously senior vice president and chief operating officer for distribution. He will retain the title of general counsel.

"Nick has been instrumental in shaping Calamos' research and investment process over the last 25 years, generating solid long-term performance for our clients," said Chairman, CEO and Co-Chief Investment Officer John P. Calamos, Sr.. "Jim has been in the investment management business for almost 20 years. He joined Calamos in 2008 and helped us steer through an extremely challenging time for the industry. The promotion of Nick and Jim helps to strengthen our senior management structure, and I look forward to continuing to work with them as we grow our business and serve our clients."

Whitman Out at Third Ave.

Third Avenue Management's Martin Whitman, one of the company's co-founders, has stepped down from his role as co-CIO. Curtis Jensen, who is referred to as Whitman's protege in a Jan. 4 press release, will take over as the sole CIO at the firm. He currently shares the duties with Whitman. Jensen originally joined Third Avenue in 1995. In 2003, he was named co-CIO, and currently manages the Third Avenue Small-Cap Value Fund. "Curtis Jensen is uniquely qualified to lead the Third Avenue investment team," President and CEO David Barse said in a statement. "In his role as co-Chief Investment Officer, he has worked closely with Marty ensuring the integrity of Third Avenue's investment philosophy, and overseeing Third Avenue's research process."
