Gabe Rissman of YourStake on why to ask clients their thoughts on straws

Is winter's coldest stretch getting you down? Do you seek an escape from the harsh, frigid conditions on Wall Street?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

This new year, unwrap a special look at the Future Proof Festival through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

In this clip, Gabe Rissman of ESG data technology firm YourStake told FP Chief Correspondent Tobias Salinger how his firm works with financial advisors and asset managers representing more than $2 trillion in assets under management after launching in 2019. One of its products called "ESG Metaphor Metrics" enables advisors to show clients the impact of their portfolios through measures such as how many fewer pounds of plastic end up in the ocean.

Rissman said that advisors may sometimes have misconceptions about their clients' level of interest in some form of ESG criteria. He suggested they start with a simple question about their customers' values when speaking with them. He gave another example of an even less difficult opening question — asking their thoughts on plastic straws — that can lead conversations in important directions for any given client relationship.

Future Proof, an event billed as the first wealth festival, attracted more than 2,200 people to Huntington Beach, California, earlier this year. Financial Planning was a sponsor of the event. Dates for Future Proof 2023 have already been announced. The event is slated to return to the beach Sept. 10-13, 2023.
