Janus Announces PM Changes

Janus Capital Group announced a number of portfolio management changes on Monday. The firm has named Doug Rao portfolio manager of Janus Forty Fund and Aspen Forty Portfolio, replacing Ron Sachs, who has decided to leave the firm, effective May 31, 2013. Replacing Sachs as portfolio manager of Janus Twenty Fund is Marc Pinto,  a 19-year veteran of Janus’ large-cap growth equity investment team.

Meanwhile, effective May 13, 2013, Jonathan Coleman has been appointed portfolio manager of Janus Triton Fund. In addition, Coleman and equity research analyst Maneesh Modi have been named co-portfolio managers of Janus Venture Fund. Coleman and Modi replace Chad Meade and Brian Schaub, who are leaving the firm; they will work with Coleman and Modi in the coming weeks to transition the portfolios.

Some history

Rao was employed for seven years by Marsico Capital Management as partner and portfolio manager of the Marsico Flexible Capital Fund, co-portfolio manager of both the Marsico Focus Fund and the Marsico Growth Fund, and earlier as a senior equity analyst covering global financial services.  Most recently he was a partner and equity portfolio manager at Chautauqua Capital.

Meanwhile, Pinto will maintain his role as co-portfolio manager of Janus Balanced Fund and portfolio manager of Janus Growth and Income Fund in addition to his new role as portfolio manager of the Janus Twenty Fund, which is closed to new investors.

For his part, Coleman joined Janus as a small-cap analyst in 1994 and co-managed Janus Venture Fund and related small-cap strategies from February 1997 until December 2000. Additionally, he managed Janus Enterprise Fund, which invests in small- and mid-cap stocks, from February 2002 to October 2007.

Modi has been with Janus since May 2008 as an analyst focused on small- and mid-cap stocks, primarily in the financial services and industrial sectors. Previously, he was a senior research analyst at Wasatch Advisors.

In connection with these changes, Coleman has relinquished his role as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Fund and Aspen Janus Portfolio to his co-portfolio manager Barney Wilson, who is sole manager and maintains his position as assistant director of research. Wilson, who has 16 years of investment experience, joined Janus as an equity research analyst in January 2005 and has served as co-portfolio manager of the Janus Fund and Aspen Janus Portfolio since May 2011. He served as the portfolio manager of the Janus Global Technology Fund from February 2006 to May 2011.
