Shaping Wealth's Brian Portnoy on outsourced behavioral finance

Is winter's final stretch getting you down? Do you seek an escape from the harsh, frigid conditions on Wall Street?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

Take a special look back at the Future Proof Festival through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

This clip features Brian Portnoy, the founder of Chicago-based behavioral finance consultancy Shaping Wealth and one of FP's "23 people who will leave a mark on wealth management in 2023." Portnoy told Chief Correspondent Tobias Salinger how the psychological sides of money and planning often affect the way financial advisors' clients view their investments.

The current banking crisis offers only the latest example of a time when advisors are helping guide clients through turmoil. Portnoy spoke just after his company rolled out its "outsourced chief behavioral officer" membership program, which gives advisors access to behavioral content, tools, coaching and a larger professional network as they aid clients in navigating through difficult economic periods.

Portnoy also found time to share what enabled him to be such a great follow on Twitter and other social media, although he credits the "Fintwit" community for his success there.

Future Proof, an event billed as the first wealth festival, attracted more than 2,200 people to Huntington Beach, California, earlier this year. Financial Planning was a sponsor of the event. Dates for Future Proof 2023 have already been announced. The event is slated to return to the beach Sept. 10-13, 2023.
