FPA Honors Industry Leaders

One advocated for a strong code of ethics among planners. One conducted ground-breaking research into basic assumptions behind common retirement planning practices. And ten have given extraordinary amounts of time to teach financial planning and to provide it for people who might not otherwise get it.

The FPA will honor these 12 individuals at its annual conference this weekend and next week in San Antonio, Texas. One of the honorees, economist Wade Pfau, is also the recipient of Financial Planning's 2012 Influencer Award for Portfolio Management, in the October issue. Jon Beyrer is a 2012 recipient of FP's annual Pro Bono Awards for his work on a team of planners with families of critically ill children. Another, Anja Luesink won one of FP's 2011 Influencer Awards for her work with a team of planners who have helped 911 victims.

"It's a testament to the passion of the financial planning community that we have one of our largest groups of honorees this year," says the FPA's incoming executive director Lauran Schadle. "These are often unsung individuals who unselfishly commit countless hours for the betterment of financial planning and the public at large."

2011 Montgomery-Warschauer Award: Wade D. Pfau

Pfau is the first recipient of this award, which is given by the editors of the Journal of Financial Planning to honor the paper that provided the most outstanding contribution for the betterment of the Journal's readership in the preceding year. Pfau has published multiple articles in the Journal, beginning in 2010. In 2011, he contributed three papers to the Journal, including "Safe Savings Rates: A New Approach to Retirement Planning over the Life Cycle," which was published in May 2011. Historically, researchers have focused on determining safe retirement withdrawal rates. This paper treats accumulation and decumulation as an integrated whole, and focuses on determining what an individual's savings rate would have to be to safely sustain retirement.

The award is named in honor of Tom Warschauer, the Journal's first academic editor, and Henry Montgomery, whose leadership was instrumental to the Institute of Certified Financial Planners and creation of what was to become the present-day Journal.
