Bowne & Co. President Dies

Financial printing giant Bowne & Co. of New York announced the death of James P. O'Neil, the company's president, COO and a member of its board of directors. O'Neil died Jan. 13 of a heart attack at the age of 55, the company said.

A permanent successor has not been named, but prior to his death, O'Neil had turned day-to- day operations of the company's financial print group over to Duncan Varty, senior vice president of operations and Kenneth Swanson, senior vice president of manufacturing.

O'Neil's primary responsibilities were standardizing Bowne's operational systems for newly-acquired companies worldwide, according to Kim Freeman, a company spokesperson. Those duties will be temporarily handled by Robert M. Johnson, president and CEO, and Carl J. Crosetto, executive vice president of sales.

The company's senior management and board still need to determine a successor, Freeman said.
