To complement advisory services, wealth management firm Edward Jones started offering financial safety platform Carefull to its clients.
Carefull, a fintech, monitors accounts that clients link to its platform and provides alerts to help them, along with trusted contacts and family members, watch for fraud or mistakes.
St. Louis-based Edward Jones, which has more than 20,000 financial advisors, said in a June 24 announcement that it partnered with New York City-based Carefull because it recognizes "rising fraud risks often require more than traditional safeguards." Clients can remain independent while catching early signs of fraud.
Elder fraud, involving debit cards, bank accounts and more, and accidental transactions are among the circumstances that Carefull cites for when its service would be useful. The company says it can help adult children, for example, identify suspicious financial activity and help prevent their parents from losing money or minimize losses, such as stopping automatic recurring donations that the donor only intended to make once.
The service can also help to flag and prevent identity fraud, and it offers $1 million identity theft insurance. Carefull itself, the company says, cannot access or move funds.

Other parts of Carefull's services include "ScamCheck," which identifies scam emails, texts or letters, as well as a password manager. When advisors need information, adult children might have to search for passwords and other account information their parents have written down on paper.
For advisors, building relationships with clients' adult children can also help develop next-gen relationships, Rovak said.
