Randall Lee to Head Up Wilmer Cutler L.A. Office

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr has snagged Randall Lee, the former Los Angeles regional director for the Securities and Exchange Commission, as the lead partner for its first office in Los Angeles.

William Perlstein, co-chairman of Wilmer Cutler's management committee, said the firm was waiting to hire the right people before opening a Los Angeles office and called Lee "one of the leading, if not the leading, enforcement lawyer on the West Coast."

Since Lee left the SEC in July, more than 35 firms expressed interest in hiring him, according to a recruiter at Major, Lindsey & Africa.

Before joining the SEC, Lee was an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles from 1994 to 2001.

BoA Hires Fidelity Exec to Oversee Retirement Unit

Bank of America has hired a Fidelity Investments executive to run its business retirement solutions unit.

Bill Carey, who led national accounts for Fidelity Investments Institutional Services, has been named national executive of the BoA unit. He will oversee the development and delivery of 401(k), defined benefit and institutional custody products.

He will report to Cary Grace, the mid-market institutional executive in the newly formed Bank of America Retirement and Global Wealth and Investment Management Client Solutions Group.

Carey joined Fidelity in 1993 in the Boston company's corporate 401(k) division as national sales manager for Fidelity Investments Institutional Services' emerging corporate market group.

In 2003 he was named president of Fidelity Investments Institutional Services. Later, he was named president of Fidelity Registered Investment Advisor Group, which provides wealth management, custody and brokerage services to registered investment advisors and third-party administrators.

Bowne Recruits Blake to Spearhead XBRL Services

Bowne has hired Rob Blake as director, interactive services, a position in which he will create comprehensive extensible business reporting language (XBRL) and extensible markup language (XML) services.

"Bowne has been a pioneer in supporting interactive data and continues to demonstrate its commitment to XBRL, both as a service provider and as a participating company," said Erika Craven, vice president, strategic marketing at Bowne Financial Communications.

"We're committed to minimizing the impact future [XBRL] mandates [by the SEC] will have on our clients, and the addition of Rob to our team goes a long way toward solidifying and expanding those efforts."

Blake is a founding member of XBRL International, a consortium of more than 550 technology, accounting and finance companies created in 1999 to develop XBRL.

Guilfoyle Now Co-CEO At Matthews International

William J. Guilfoyle has joined Matthews International Capital Management, advisor to the Matthews Asian Funds, as co-chief executive officer, overseeing the firm along with Mark W. Headley, who has served as Matthews' CEO since 2001.
