Lyons Becomes Director On Morningstar Board

William M. Lyons, the former president and chief executive officer of American Century Investments, has joined the board of directors of Morningstar and will also sit on the audit committee.

Lyons joined American Century in 1987 as assistant general counsel and also served as general counsel, executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Before joining American Century, he was an associate at McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen, now Bingham McCutchen. Before that, he was a law clerk at the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.

Lyons also served for more than 10 years as a member of the board of governors and executive committee of the Investment Company Institute.

AIM Promotes Cooper To Head of U.S. Sales

AIM Investments has promoted John S. Cooper from director of business development and national accounts to head of U.S. sales, reporting to Senior Managing Director Phil Taylor, who also heads up Invesco's North American retail business including AIM.

"We had been conducting a search internally and externally for a sales leader for AIM in recent months and have determined that John is the right person to lead our sales activities in the U.S.," Taylor said.

Cooper joined AIM in 2000 from Putnam Investments, where he had worked as vice president of sales administration and client development in the international division since 1998. Before that, he held various positions in Putnam's defined contribution unit starting in 1995.

ALPS Appoints Donaldson As Chief Financial Officer

ALPS Fund Services has named John Donaldson chief financial officer.

Donaldson, who has more than 15 years of experience in financial management and investment banking, was previously executive vice president and chief financial officer at Northstar Exchange.

Donaldson also served as a managing principal at financial advisory firm Bison Partners, which he founded to serve small to middle-market companies.

"John's experience will be a great benefit to ALPS, and I expect he'll have a significant impact on the growth and financial success of the company," said Ned Burke, ALPS president.

Garner, Johnson Join Grail

Laura Garner and Steven Johnson have joined Grail Partners as partners.

Garner, who has 25 years of experience in the asset management business, previously was a consultant with ClearBrook Advisors, Concept Capital and Juniper Capital. She also was global marketing director at Merrill Lynch Global Debt Markets, chief marketing officer at Internet Partnership Group, U.S. marketing director at Goldman Sachs Investment Management, global marketing director at Citigroup Alternative Investments and director of research, planning and analysis at Chase Manhattan Bank.

Johnson was previously a partner at DLB Capital. Before that, he was executive vice president at Schroder Investment Management, N.A., director of North American business development at Marathon-London, vice president of North American business development at Martin Curries, director of marketing and client service at Neuberger & Berman and director of global marketing at Gordon Haskett.
