Canellos to Run SEC's New York Bureau

The Securities and Exchange Commission has selected George Canellos to run its New York office. A former prosecutor, Canellos is currently a defense lawyer at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy and will be joining the Commission in July.

He previously worked in the securities fraud unit in the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan for eight years with Robert Khuzami, the SEC's new head of enforcement.

Russella Becomes Head of Wilmington's Wealth Unit

Wilmington Trust has promoted Charles Russella to president of the Wilmington Trust Retirement and Institutional Services Co., which provides trust and custody services for retirement and employee benefit plans, collective fund services and institutional account services. He succeeds Gregory W. Tschider, who has decided to leave the company on June 26 to pursue new opportunities. The two executives came to Wilmington last year through the acquisition of AST Capital Trust.

Russella brings more than 20 years of experience in corporate trust and retirement services to his position, most recently as senior vice president and sales manager overseeing all sales and marketing activities for Wilmington Trust's retirement services group. Before that, he was with a retirement benefit and investment consulting firm, and he served 14 years in the retirement services business of U.S. Bank.

Fennessy Joins Alger as Regional Marketing Manager

Fred Alger Management has hired John Fennessy as vice president, regional marketing manager for Florida and Georgia. A 14-year veteran of the investment management industry, he was previously a regional vice president with BlackRock and with Alliance Bernstein.

Liz Clapp, senior vice president and national sales manager for Alger, said, "We are pleased to have John join our organization. His extensive industry experience and background will allow us to serve our important clients in the Southeast at a very high level. We believe John is going to contribute meaningfully to Alger's growth in the future."

Griffiths Becomes MFS' Northeast Sales Director

MFS Investment Management has appointed Kent Griffiths divisional director for the Northeast for its distribution arm, MFS Fund Distributors. He has been with the firm for the past 13 years.

He replaces Douglas Bailey, who was also promoted, to national sales manager, when Jac McLean left to manage the brokerage division at Eaton Vance.

"Griffiths has helped to establish and maintain strong, longstanding relationships with independent and bank advisers in the Northeast over the last decade," Bailey said. "As a result, he has a tremendous understanding of our clients' needs that will serve him well in his new role."

Evercore Wealth Opens, Staffs San Francisco Office

Evercore Wealth Management of New York has announced the opening of a San Francisco office and addition of four partners and a senior adviser who will be based in the office.

It has hired William Vaughn and Judith Moses to be equity portfolio managers and Charles "Butch" Swindells to be a senior adviser. Two more partners are to join the company in July. Swindells was the western regional vice chairman for U.S. Trust Bank of America private wealth management.
