“The success of my book has been strong,” Springer said of Facing Goliath: How to Triumph in the Dangerous Market Ahead, which was published last June. He added that he is bringing on a second Sacramento-based planner to prevent his firm from turning away new clients who need help. “We are growing fast. I’m bringing (Guanill) on to handle the increased business we’ve had.”

Prior to opening his own practice, Guanill worked for TASQ Technology, where he managed accounts for some of the largest banks including Ameritech, First Bank, Sun Trust and U.S. Bank. In 1999, Guanill started his own company, Coastal Payment Systems, which educated business owners on financial growth strategies and technology implementation. Next Guanill rejoined TASQ as director of business development. In 2005, he started his own firm, J. R. Asset Management to provide financial planning services.

Like Springer, Guanill focused his practice on low-risk financial solutions.

Guanill is a graduate of California State University at Sacramento where he earned a bachelor's degree in communications with a focus on public relations.

Springer is host of the radio program, "Smart Money with Keith Springer."

Ann Marsh writes for Financial Planning.
