Morningstar Names Mutual Fund Managers of the Year

Morningstar of Chicago has announced its 1999 Mutual Fund Manager of the Year award winners in three categories: domestic equity, international stock and fixed-income.

The domestic equity winner is Jim Callinan, manager of RS Emerging Growth Fund. The fund, advised by RS Investment Management of San Francisco, gained 183 percent for the year and has had consistently strong returns over the past three years, said Christine Benz, associate editor at Morningstar.

The international stock winner is the team that runs EuroPacific Growth Fund: Stephen Bepler, Thierry Vandeventer, Janet McKinley, Mark Denning, Robert Lovelace, Martial Chaillet and Alwyn Heong. The fund is advised by Capital Research & Management of Los Angeles. It gained 57 percent this year and its five, 10 and 15-year returns are near the top of the foreign-stock fund category, Benz said.

The fixed-income manager of the year is Jerry Paul of the Invesco High Yield Fund. Advised by Invesco Funds Group of Denver, Colo., it gained 9.4 percent for the year. Since assuming management of the fund in 1994, Paul has had a very strong five-year record, Benz said.
